This blog considers the questions “What Is So Important About London”, or the better put: “Why Is London So Important?”
One quick search provided this:
London holds a unique and significant place both in the UK and globally for several reasons:
- Historical Significance: London has a rich history spanning nearly two millennia. It was established by the Romans as Londinium and has been a major settlement since1.
- Economic Powerhouse: London is the UK’s largest city and generates around 22% of the country’s GDP1. It is a global financial hub, home to the London Stock Exchange and numerous multinational corporations2.
- Cultural Hub: The city is renowned for its vibrant cultural scene, including world-class museums, galleries, theatres, and music venues. It is also a center for literature, art, and fashion2.
- Educational Excellence: London hosts some of the world’s leading universities and research institutions, attracting students and academics from around the globe1.
- Multiculturalism: London is one of the most diverse cities in the world, with over 270 nationalities and 300 languages spoken2. This diversity enriches the city’s cultural fabric and makes it a truly global metropolis.
- Tourism: As one of the most visited cities in the world, London offers iconic landmarks such as the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, and the British Museum2.
- Transport and Connectivity: London is a major transport hub with extensive rail, road, and air connections. Its airports, including Heathrow and Gatwick, are among the busiest in the world3.
These factors collectively make London a vital city on both a national and international scale.
Historically, London has since the seventeenth century been the heart of a power empire, one that technically ended as recently as 1997. With immense wealth and powerful innovation, the expansion of British-backed globalised powered by the industrial revolution, the world was projected into a new era. Empire is a contentious issue, however what is undeniable is the extensive impact it had on the world, and consequently in London. The Bank of England was founded at its current location at Threadneedle Street in “The City”. With merchants and bankers, much imperial and commercial speculation and investment developed The City of London (The Mile Square city) into the “purse” of the empire.
Therefore, with this mind, it’s no surprise with that economic, military and imperial progression came the domestic developments such as art and culture. Much after the age of Shakespeare, deep into the imperial age, London has drawn and fostered the works of Dickens and even Van Gogh (see Doughty Street and Southampton Street). The naval power and imperial expansion also brought with it the multiculturalism of what London is today. For years, centuries however, London has been a refuge and residence for a plethora of peoples. Ranging from Lenin to Marx, (Bloomsbury and Soho respectively), the Huguenots, Greeks and Jewish communities (Soho, Whitechapel and more).

An intellectual powerhouse, London has cultivated and fostered the development in various fields from science, to literature to architecture and more. The Royal Society “a fellowship of many of the world’s most eminent scientists and is the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence” was founded by Charles II in 1662. Some of it’s most famous alumni include Sir Christopher Wren (the architect who rebuilt London after the Great Fire of London 1666), Isaac Newton, Benjamin Franklin, Michael Faraday and Charles Darwin. The Royal Society is responsible for the Great Exhibition of 1851, the work of Prince Albert (Consort to Queen Victoria 1840-1861), of which initiated the World Expo – the first of its kind and the first event of tourism to such a scale: millions attended of various nationalities, cultures and class. Look for the Scientific American on the Great Exhibition (1851) to get an idea of the immensity of its build, audience and wonder!
