Did you know that on this day in 1559, Elizabeth I was coronated at Westminster Abbey? The daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth was the last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. Despite much interest from many suitors, Elizabeth never married or had children, and was often referred to as the Virgin Queen – the state of Virginia in America was named for her when it was colonised during her reign.

Elizabeth I reigned for 44 years, and her time on the throne is referred to as the Elizabethan era. She reinstated Protestant Reformation of the church, after her half sister Mary I (Bloody Mary) had tried and failed to restore Roman Catholicism in England. She was a strong and stable ruler at a time when men believed that women could not understand the intricacies of leading a nation. She fought against this stereotype and proved herself to be a capable ruler, notably when her army repelled the Spanish Armada in 1588.
