On This Day
9th January 2023 (1806), Lord Horatio Nelson’s State Funeral.
Nelson lost his life at the victorious Battle of Trafalgar (21 October 1805), preventing Napoleon’s French and Spanish forces from invading Britain. Nelson’s body is transported back from Trafalgar to Britain preserved in a barrel of rum.
He arrived at Greenwich on 23 December 1805 and lay in state in the Painted Hall (at the Old Royal Naval College) from the 5th to 7th January, visited by more than 15,000 people who came to pay their respect. He was then taken from Greenwich up to Whitehall, spending the night at the Admiralty Building on the 8th January.
Nelson was given a five-day state funeral. His coffin – at his request – made from the mast of the French ship L’Orient, of which he defeated at the Battle of the Nile (1-3 August 1798). His funeral took place at St Paul’s Cathedral and laid to rest at St Paul’s along with another Napoleonic Wars hero, the Duke of Wellington, Sir Arthur Wellesley.
Lord Horatio Nelson, Britain’s most celebrated naval commander, gave his life in victory and in honour, saving her from invasion.
