On this day in 1948, Charles Philip Arthur George was born at Buckingham Palace, during the reign of his grandfather, King George VI. He was the eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip. He became the heir apparent when his mother acceded to the throne in 1952. He held the title of the Prince of Wales from 1958, until his accession to throne upon his mother’s death, thereby making him the longest serving heir apparent and Prince of Wales in British history! King Charles is renowned for working closely with many organisations, publicly supporting a wide variety of causes relating to the environment, rural communities, the built environment, the arts, healthcare and education.
Also on this day in 1973, Princess Anne married her first husband, Mark Phillips, at Westminster Abbey – HRH Charles’ 25th birthday!
