Did you know that on this day in 1066, Harold II was coronated? He was the successor of Edward the Confessor, who died childless and leaving no direct heir to the throne. The King’s high Council, known as the Witan, convened and declared that Harold should succeed to the throne as he had proved himself to be a strong leader with great military and diplomatic ability having spent many years ruling England on Edward’s behalf as an Earl.
Harold was the last Anglo-Saxon King to rule in England. He reigned for only 9 months until the Battle of Hastings, where he was killed on the battlefield and his army were defeated by William the Conqueror. Although the Bayeux Tapestry depicts that Harold died by an arrow to the eye, this is much debated amongst historians! His final resting place remains unknown to this day.
